To start the new year I am happy to announce our Call for Paper of the Special Interest Group on Wearable Enhanced Learning (WELL) at the European Association of Technology Enhanced Learning: http://ea-tel.eu/special-interest-groups/well/

1 Topic of the Special Track

Wearable technologies – such as smart watches, smart glasses, smart objects, smart earbuds, or smart garments – are just starting to transform immersive user experience into formal education and learning at the workplace. These devices are body-worn, equipped with sensors and conveniently integrate into leisure and work-related activities including physical movements of their users.

Wearable-technology Enhanced Learning (WELL) is beginning to emerge as a new discipline in technology enhanced learning in combination with other relevant trends like the transformation of classrooms, new mobility concepts, and cyber-physical systems. Wearable devices play an integral role in the digital transformation of industrial and logistics processes in the Industry 4.0 and thus demand new learning and training concepts like experience capturing, re-enactment and smart human-computer interaction.

This proposal of a special track is the offspring of the SIG WELL (http://ea-tel.eu/special-interest-groups/well/) in the context of the European Association for Technology Enhanced Learning (EATEL). It is a follow up proposal for the inaugural session we had at the iLRN 2015 in Prague. In the meantime, the SIG was successful in organising a number of similar events at major research conferences and business oriented fairs like the EC-TEL, the I-KNOW and the Online Educa Berlin OEB. Moreover, the SIG has involved in securing substantial research funds through the H2020 project WEKIT (www.wekit.eu). The SIG would like to use the opportunity to present itself as a platform for scientific and industrial knowledge exchange. EATEL and major EU research projects and networks in the field support it. Moreover, we’ll seek to attach an IEEE standard association community meeting of the working group on Augmented Reality Learning Experience Models (IEEE ARLEM).

Contributing papers have to undergo a peer review process and will be included
in the conference proceedings, depending on the overall quality and special tracks chairs’ decision, either as a long paper (10 – 12 pages) or as a short paper (6 -8 pages). Excellent papers will be deemed full papers (14 pages) and included in the Springer proceedings. Authors of selected papers will also be invited to extend their contribution and to be published in a special issue of the JCR-indexed Journal of Universal Computer Science.

The PLE Conference 2013: Call for Papers

Now it is official – the next PLE Conference in 2013 will be held in Berlin & Melbourne! Save the date – it is 10 -12 July 2013. The special theme next year is: Personal Learning Environments: Learning and Diversity in Cities of the Future

I am really thrilled about hosting the Berlin PLE Conference at Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin (Germany) and connect with colleagues at the Monash University in Melbourne (Australia). There are so many things to consider and take care of when organising a conference, but so far it has been a great challenge and I have been enjoying it a lot. With all these great people in the organising committee, it has been a real pleasure to plan, organise and share new ideas! To keep it up with the spirit of the past PLE Conferences, we aim to make the next PLE Conference equally interactive and engaging. The PLE 2013 will be up for UN-keynotes, pecha kuchas, fishbowls, workshops and hackathons. We are open to YOUR ideas!

Mobile Learning and Creativity

Mobile Learning and Creativity are of great interest for different reasons. Mobile media are ubiquitous and omnipresent. We use mobile devices and mobile applications everyday, to communicate, work, play, plan and orientate. Creativity is one the key skills which not only makes us feel empowered, happy and successful but basically helps us to survive in the complex world we live in. Creativity is also the driving force of social and economic development. Societies and economies have to be creative to make best of the resources we have, handle global and local challenges and pave the way for the sustainable future. We all need personal resilience and creative capacity in the challenging times bei it financial crises, climate change, civil wars, unemployment or such every day problems as conflict solving or event planning.

We have started two initiatives aiming at stimulating the discussion about how can mobile media foster creativity in global, local and personal terms. The focus is on mobile learning in formal and informal contexts. These two initiatives are the Mobile Learning and Creativity Workshop at the international EC-TEL 2012 Conference in Saarbruecken (Germany) and the Call for Papers for the Special Issue of the International Journal of Mobile and Blended Learning (IJMBL) titled “Mobile Learning and Creativity: Current Concepts and Studies.”

What is the understanding of creativity underlying these two Calls? Here is what we say in the introduction to the Special Issue of IJMBL:

The understanding of creativity underlying this Special Issue is based on an open concept allowing different views and approaches, favouring process-oriented or person-cantered conceptualisations of creativity, including such notions as “connective, social activity” (Fischer, 2011) or “collaborative creativity” (Herrmann, 2009), ”making something new, something valuable or useful for a particular group” (Sternberg, 1999), “making something novel in a given context” (Gauntlett, 2011), or as “connecting with others, sharing and putting together ideas and artifacts to create something novel from the creator’s perspective in a particular context” (Jahnke, 2011). These approaches emphasize the importance of creativity for the engagement with social and physical environment, active and meaningful participation.

I am really looking forward to the discussion and ideas about how mobile media which we use everyday can    help us be creative in our everyday lives, how can we use mobile media to find creative solutions to problems, create unique pieces of work and forge the culture of innovation sensu Mark Federman:

“See – what isn’t there, what we have been conditioned to ignore because our attention has been directed elsewhere for so long. An extension – Think – what no one else can think, in other words, beyond the imposed mental restrictions that limit creative cognition. An obsolescence – Do what no one else dares to do, because the societal ground in which their actions once made sense is now obsolesced. And the fourth principle – Multiply your mind by giving it away – is the retrieval, the dominant mode of the tetrad. One could say that this fourth principle is the retrieval of simple, oldfashion charity, but in a new and incredibly powerful form.”*

Networked Identities – an Open Book Project

“Networked Identities” is the title of the open textbook project Serge Ravet (EIFEL) and me have initiated not long ago. The first step of the project is the workshop at the 10th ePortfolio and Identity –  ePIC 2012 – Conference in London. As “Networked Identities” is intended as an open, collaborative project, we invite everyone interested in the questions of:

“How digital technologies reshape identity construction in the 21st century?”

to shape this project with us. The Networked Identities Workshop will be dedicated to collecting the first inputs from the community on the book, discussing book objectives, structure and core areas to be covered. For the time being our introduction to the book says:

“The environment in which we construct and express our identities in the 21st century is being dominated by the ubiquitous presence of digital networks and media. To what extent do digital networks and media contribute to renewed forms of emancipation and/or alienation? How can we maximise their beneficial effects in empowering autonomous identity construction, whilst minimising adverse consequences? Does the emergence of a Cyberspace challenge our current understanding of identity construction? Is it primarily an issue of ‘assimilation’ (integrating new means to do slightly differently what we did before) or ‘accommodation’ (the need to transform our representations and invent new practices)?  What is the impact on the future of education, practice, research, technologies, business models, policies, etc.? Is there a risk that identity-related technologies and regulations might be retrofitted to the ‘real world’ with negative consequences on our freedom? How can citizens be empowered to make contributions to the technology and policy debates on identity issues?”

The Call for Abstracts for the Networked Identities Workshop is at the same time a Call for Chapters and Contributions for the Networked Identities Book. This means you can submit an abstract for the workshop and/or abstract for the book itself. Authors of selected workshop abstracts will be invited to submit chapters for the book.

We are very glad that  Athabasca University Press, a fully open access publisher dedicated to the free dissemination of knowledge throughout the world, has already expressed a keen interest in publishing the collection, contingent on the successful outcome of external peer review.

The digital version of the book will be published under Creative Commons.

Personal Learning Environments: Call for Contributions

This is the third time we organise the international PLE Conference and the third time we host the PLE Mediacast Contest. Over these three years have built a vivid international community inspired by the idea of Personal Learning Environments (PLE) as a concept reflecting self-directed practice of appropriating convergent media for learning (as I see it). As every year, we invite everyone to participate in the discussion on Personal Learning Environments by taking part in the conference, including the Mediacast Contest, which aims at enhancing the participatory culture (see: Henry Jenkins) also in the academic world.

The PLE Mediacast Contest follows the idea that by producing new creative forms, such as digital videos, individuals and groups can contribute to shaping the evolution of concepts, such as Personal Learning Environments. By creating and shaping the flow of media, each of us has the opportunity to contribute to the global discourse about what we understand under the term “Personal Learning Environments”, to share examples and experiences of Personal Learning Environments, to discuss potentials and challenges of Personal Learning Environments, to bring in perspectives from different domains, including academic perspectives (such as educational, social and computer sciences) and non-academic perspectives (such as enterprise, public and individual practice), and to express own future visions of Personal Learning Environments. Therefore, I would like to invite you to the PLE Mediacast Contest and sharing your own production with the PLE community!

Just a short, personal story to wind up: This year I asked a group of students to create a video announcing the PLE Mediacast Contest. Unfortunately, as it turned out pretty late, the project could not be realised. So there I was end of April without the video we have been planning for months. Disappointed as I was, I realised that it may be a good moment for me to learn how to work with tools sich as iMovie. Surprisingly, producing an own video was much easier than I thought. It took me two evenings altogether to learn the tool and create the video which you can see below.

So, let me just encourage you to participate and let your creativity unfold!
